STAGING AREAS

Solutions

The Challenge Temporary laydown yards and staging areas on unprepared ground deteriorate rapidly under material storage loads and vehicle traffic — creating mud, instability, and logistics inefficiency.

The Solution Composite mat hardstanding creates stable, all-weather staging areas, boneyards, and laydown yards without the cost and permanence of crushed rock or concrete.

Key Challenges

What Makes Staging Areas Demanding

Ground Stability

Staging areas for plant and materials are often on unprepared ground that cannot sustain repeated loading.

  • Ground Failure
  • Equipment Instability

Environmental Protection

Conventional hardstanding of staging areas causes long-term damage to underlying land and soil.

  • Land Degradation
  • Hardstand Contamination

Operational Efficiency

Poorly prepared staging areas reduce logistics efficiency and slow equipment and material turnaround.

  • Turnaround Delays
  • Logistics Bottlenecks
Engineered Solutions

Expert Insights

Load Zoning

Well-designed staging areas assign different mat grades to different zones based on load intensity. Heavy material storage and crane positions require the full DuraBase 105mm system, while pedestrian access paths and light vehicle areas can use lighter panel grades to reduce overall cost.

Drainage Design

Staging area mats should be laid with a slight gradient toward drainage points to prevent water ponding on the surface. JWA recommends incorporating drainage channels at mat edges in areas with significant rainfall or stormwater inflow.

International Sporting Event

A 4-day large-scale sporting event in Sydney featured a unique car race held on an island. Dura-Base mats were chosen to provide a high-performance surface capable of handling high-speed manoeuvres, replacing generic light-duty options that were insufficient.

Stockyard Hill - Transmission Line Works

The Stockyard Hill Wind Farm project involved connecting over 74km of transmission lines across challenging and sensitive terrain. Dura-Base composite matting was used extensively across several scopes including construction access tracks, turbine construction, and trenching. This case study focuses on the transmission line works and the environmental protection measures implemented.

Sunshine Coast, QLD

Sunshine Coast Solar Farm

The Sunshine Coast Solar Farm project faced challenges with a low-lying, flood-prone site during the wet season. Dura-Base mats provided essential temporary access for 100t cranes, crane lift platforms, and mud-free staging areas, enabling the project to be delivered safely and on time.
