Stockyard Hill - Transmission Line Works

Overview

The Stockyard Hill Wind Farm project involved connecting over 74km of transmission lines across challenging and sensitive terrain. Dura-Base composite matting was used extensively across several scopes including construction access tracks, turbine construction, and trenching. This case study focuses on the transmission line works and the environmental protection measures implemented.

Critical Environmental & Cultural Protection

The transmission line route traversed areas of significant archaeological importance to the Wathaurong tribe, as well as habitats for the endangered Striped Legless Lizard and protected flora like the Spiny Rice-flower and White Sunray.

Furthermore, inclement weather frequently threatened site conditions and project schedules, making it essential to have a stable access solution that wouldn't contaminate or damage the sensitive grounds.

Environmentally-Friendly Site Solution

Dura-Base composite mats, with their 105mm thickness and interlocking feature, created a continuous, stable surface with minimal ground disturbance. This provided safe access for telehandlers, excavators, and heavy lift cranes while ensuring overhead powerline stringing equipment and cable reels remained above the mud.

The mats' flexibility allowed the team to adjust layouts as needed, while the waterproof and non-contaminating nature of the HDPE material ensured that the sensitive environments and cultural heritage sites were fully protected throughout the project.

Results

By using Dura-Base matting, JWA enabled the transmission line works to proceed despite challenging weather and strict environmental constraints. The project successfully protected endangered species and cultural sites while maintaining a safe and efficient workflow for all heavy equipment involved.
