Overview
The Wheatstone project required geotechnical drilling operations over a period of 12 months. Dura-Base mats were essential for providing access to the site, as the soft ground conditions caused standard all-terrain vehicles to bog. Additionally, the mats protected heavy machinery from the corrosive acid sulphate soils present on site.
Soft Ground & Corrosive Soil
The project faced significant challenges due to the ground conditions. The soft soil proved too difficult for standard all-terrain vehicles, which were meant to be the solution but quickly became bogged.
Furthermore, the soil contained acid sulphate soils, which posed a serious threat to the heavy machinery, causing corrosion and potential damage to expensive equipment.
Protective Access Platform
Dura-Base composite mats provided the necessary solution by creating a stable, continuous access platform over the soft ground. This allowed drilling rigs and support vehicles to traverse the site without bogging.
Crucially, the mats also acted as a barrier, separating the heavy machinery from the corrosive acid sulphate soils, thereby protecting the equipment and ensuring the longevity of the assets throughout the 12-month campaign.
Results
The implementation of Dura-Base mats ensured the successful continuation of the geotechnical drilling program. By overcoming the soft ground issues and negating the risk of corrosion, the project was able to proceed efficiently and safely for its full duration.
