GM Poles Lighting Installation

Overview

Lighting experts GM Poles were tasked with the supply and installation of lighting upgrades for the City of Gold Coasts’ Miami Aquatic Centre. The project involved moving a 33-tonne Hitachi Zaxis excavator across sensitive concrete flooring and protecting buried high-pressure water pipes and tanks.

Sensitive Infrastructure & Active Site

The primary challenge was getting heavy tracked equipment across the facility's concrete floors without causing damage. Additionally, there were critical high-pressure water pipes and tanks buried beneath the site that required robust protection from the loads generated by piling works.

As the pools remained open to the public during construction, it was also essential to minimize dust and maintain a clean environment, ruling out traditional solutions like crushed rock padding.

Interlocking Load Dispersion

Dura-Base composite mats provided the ideal solution. Unlike thinner protection matting, the 105mm thickness of Dura-Base provided the maximum load spread required to protect the buried services. The HDPE mats created a stable, interlocking surface that removed the risk of gaps appearing during use.

This interlocking system provided worry-free access for the 33-tonne excavator and avoided the need for additional fill or padding. This kept the site clean and dust-free for pool users while ensuring the integrity of the concrete and underground assets.

Results

The use of Dura-Base mats allowed GM Poles to complete the lighting upgrades safely and efficiently. The protection provided to both the hardscape and buried services avoided costly damage and repairs, while the clean installation process ensured minimal disruption to the aquatic centre's operations.
