Wasteline Replacement in Tidal Flats

Overview

The QAL Waste Line Replacement project involved the installation of an 8.8 km above-ground pipeline at Queensland Alumina’s Gladstone refinery. The project required a low-impact solution to gain access for installing the new line while operations continued, as well as for the removal of the old line and piling upgrades to existing structures.

Tidal Zones & Sensitive Marine Mud

The pipeline route required access through sensitive marine mud and intertidal areas, which are home to a rich biodiversity of marine and bird life. The challenge was to provide stable and uninterrupted access for plant and vehicles over the soft mud while ensuring minimal ground disturbance and eliminating any risk of contamination to the ecosystem.

Low-Impact Marine Access

Dura-Base matting provided the ideal low-impact solution. The composite mats interlocked to form a stable roadway over the marine mud. To further protect the environment, a polyliner was used to separate the mats from the mud, preventing contamination.

To ensure stability against tidal fluctuations, star pickets were used to secure the mats. This combination provided a secure, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly platform that allowed the project team to complete the installation without harm to the intertidal zones.

Results

The implementation of Dura-Base matting streamlined the pipeline installation, reducing both the project timeline and cost. The intertidal ecosystem remained protected throughout the project, demonstrating that heavy industrial infrastructure works can be successfully completed in sensitive environments with the right access solution.
