Brisbane Airport New Runway

Overview

The construction of Brisbane Airport's new runway included the installation of HIAL runway lights. Dura-Base mats were utilised as a stable piling platform for a 280-tonne crane operating with a vibro-hammer, mitigating wet weather risks.

Installation of HIAL Runway Lights

The installation of High Intensity Approach Lighting (HIAL) for Brisbane Airport's new runway was a critical component of the project. This required the use of heavy machinery, specifically a 280-tonne crane equipped with a vibro-hammer.

Ensuring the stability of this massive crane during operations was paramount for safety and precision. Additionally, the project needed to account for potential wet weather which could compromise ground stability and delay the schedule.

Stable Piling Platform

Dura-Base Composite Mats were selected to construct a piling platform for the crane. The mats' interlocking system created a continuous, load-bearing surface capable of supporting the significant weight of the 280-tonne crane and the dynamic forces of the vibro-hammer.

The mats also served as an effective wet weather mitigation strategy. By providing a sealed, distinct surface from the ground, they ensured that operations could continue safely even in adverse weather conditions, preventing the machinery from bogging down.

Results

The use of Dura-Base mats provided a safe and stable platform for the successful installation of the HIAL runway lights. The crane operated efficiently without any stability issues. The project proceeded on schedule, unaffected by potential ground condition problems associated with wet weather, demonstrating the mats' reliability in critical aviation infrastructure projects.
